The team, story and mission of Food on Foot

At Food on Foot, we believe there are many ways to get to know a place, but few are as memorable as doing so around the table, especially when that place is the Madeira archipelago.

How did it all begin?

Our journey begins with the belief that flavours tell stories we never forget and that a traditional recipe can reveal much about people or an entire archipelago.

The story of Food on Foot began with a trip to Iceland. It was there that Jaqueline Freitas, a Madeiran and officially certified guide with extensive experience in the tourism sector, took part in a local food tour and was inspired by this format, which brings together food, culture and history in an authentic and engaging way.

On returning to Funchal, she brought with her a clear idea, to create a similar gastronomic experience deeply rooted in the soul of Madeira.

Above all, she wanted to showcase the island, its land, its stories, its people and its flavours to the world. Not with clichés or stereotypes, but with time, purpose, sophistication and authenticity.

My main idea is to showcase Madeira through its traditional cuisine, culture and everyday habits, in a casual and creative way. I want tourists to feel as if they are strolling around relaxed with friends, enjoying some snacks together.

Talking about the history of traditional food is also a way of diving into the history of a nation and its culture. We should taste the places we visit.”

Our mission

At Food on Foot, we believe that the palate gives us the chance to travel through time and space. After all, it is one of the best ways to feel, to share and to remember.

Our mission is therefore to let people taste the most genuine Madeira, the one found in regional markets, in family kitchens, on the levadas of the Laurisilva forest, at tables where wine accompanies conversation.

We want every visitor to feel part of this story and to write it with us!

Jaqueline

Founder and Official Guide

A native Madeiran, passionate about traditional food and good stories. She worked for nearly two decades as a guide-interpreter before founding Food on Foot. She is, without a doubt, the soul of this project and believes that traditional gastronomy, combined with culture, is the most powerful universal language.

Our team

The Food on Foot team has a very special connection to this Atlantic territory. They know better than anyone the flavours, the narrow streets, the gestures and the secrets of Madeiran culture, and take unparalleled pleasure in sharing them daily at the table with our visitors.

Our team of guides is made up of extraordinary women with deep roots on the island. They grew up exploring every corner and today know it better than anyone. More than official local guides, they are storytellers, warm hosts and true enthusiasts of this little slice of paradise.

Each guide brings her own unique personality, but they all share the same commitment, to provide visitors with an authentic, informative and memorable experience.

With extensive knowledge of local history, culture, nature, gastronomy and traditions, our guides turn every tour into a special moment. Whether it’s a hike through the mountains, a visit to the historic centre or a walk along lesser-known trails, they are always ready to surprise with curiosities, smiles and that personal touch that makes all the difference.

Come meet them and discover the island with those who live it every day!
